The Team
The Hiscox Re Analytics and Research Team comprises 10 people based in both Bermuda and London. Working together, the role of the team is to help ensure that Hiscox Re derives the maximum amount of profit from a given level of exposure to risk. The team is highly motivated and committed to ensuring that all decisions involving catastrophe risk are based on the best available science, information, systems and analysis, and are carried out in a coherent fashion throughout the organisation. Adding value through efficient, top class analytics is the team’s mantra.

The Role
We are looking for an exceptional catastrophe modeller who has developed an in depth understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of various 3rd party catastrophe models during their industry experience of at least 5 years. The ideal candidate will have the desire to apply this knowledge to a technical pricing role, working in very close collaboration with the International and Retro underwriting teams, to help Hiscox build portfolios with optimal risk / return characteristics. In addition, the right person will have a great enthusiasm for natural hazards and a strong work ethic, the combination of which will lead to insightful pieces of project work and thought leadership. These will be designed to impact the way Hiscox writes business, manages portfolios and will ultimately shape our Group View of Catastrophe Risk.
In short, this is a front-office position that offers the ability to help drive business strategy through application of great technical skills and strong knowledge and enthusiasm for all things catastrophe related.

The Requirements
This role is suitable for a high performing, experienced and enthusiastic individual who will possess the following skills / qualifications:
• University degree in a numerate subject such as Maths, Physics, Engineering or similar
• Experienced Catastrophe Modeller, with minimum 5 years of industry experience
• Good understanding of RMS / AIR / other catastrophe models, specifically their strengths and weaknesses, and experience of using this knowledge to shape the business
• Experience working in close collaboration with underwriting teams to provide technical pricing guidance and input to underwriting decisions
• Ability to apply strong analytical and statistical skills to produce insightful project work
• Strong computing skills including advanced use of SQL and Excel. Experience of programming languages and statistical applications would be advantageous (such as R, Matlab, Python)
• Strong communication skills and the ability to present complicated ideas clearly and concisely
• Good commercial awareness, interest in the (re)insurance market and in natural catastrophes
